Transboundary Groundwater Cooperation in the Middle East
The interest on transboundary water resources in the Middle East increased within the last years. The development cooperation concentrated mainly on popular case studies like Euphrat, Tigris, Nil and Jordan. Even within the discussion about these surface watercourses local conditions and problems were often not considered. Sources of information like maps data series are not up to date any more. Other catchment areas, as well as most of the groundwater systems, were not considered transboundary. To strengthen the transboundary water management BGR supports initiatives and events to support cooperation.
As part of a consultation of the UN-ESCWA an inventory of transboundary water resources in Western Asia has been developed, which was presented at the World Water Week 2013 in Stockholm.
