Groundwater, Sanitation and Health-Study in Yaounde/Cameroon
Urban groundwater of poor quality sustains more than 2/3 of the population of Yaounde/Cameroon. The relation between a) insufficient public water supply and urban groundwater use on one side and b) waste water discharge, poor groundwater quality, hygiene and health on the other side has been studied in a Water, Sanitation and Health (WaSH) survey. This is to announce the (french version) report of the joint WaSH survey carried out in the capital during tropical dry season in 2012.
The study has been funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Cameroonean Institute of Statistics (NIS). The NIS-report is co-authored with the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), Hannover with participation of the Institute for Hygiene and Public Health (IHPH), University Bonn, the University of Yaoundé 1 and the Hydrological Research Center of the Cameroonian Institute for Geological and Mining Research. Key features of the report (190 p) are:
- Groundwater microbiology and geochemistry of urban environments
- Quantitative household WaSH-survey (1137 households)
- Thematic mapping with Open Source GIS-software
